Assessment
A psychological assessment uses a variety of tools, such as interviews and standardized tests, to gain a deep understanding of how an individual thinks, learns, feels, and behaves. This process also uncovers the individual’s unique profile of strengths and needs across different areas of life. Our skilled psychologists integrate this information, along with insights about the individual’s environment, to create a comprehensive biopsychosocial case formulation. From there, we provide personalized recommendations aimed at supporting the individual’s growth and development.
At WellSpirit, we offer the following types of psychological assessments to meet your child’s or youth’s individual needs:
Psychoeducational Assessment – Focuses on understanding how an individual learns and processes information. This type of assessment may help to identify any issues related to learning (e.g., Learning Disability, ADHD, Giftedness) and required supports. An updated psychoeducational assessment may be particularly helpful when transitioning to different stages of development (e.g., adolescence to adulthood) and to determine eligibility for specific funding and supports (e.g., DSO).
Mental Health Assessment – Focuses on understanding an individual’s emotions and behaviours. This type of assessment may help to identify any mental health or behavioural issues (e.g., Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder). It offers clarity on how an individual’s emotional well-being and behavioural patterns may be affecting their daily life.
Neuropsychological Assessment – Focuses on understanding how an individual’s brain functions, identifying strengths and weaknesses across a variety of neurodevelopmental domains (e.g., cognition, memory, attention, executive functioning). It can be particularly helpful for individuals with brain-based or biological risk factors, such as birth complications, seizures, traumatic head injuries, genetic disorders, or FASD.
For the most comprehensive understanding of your child’s needs, we also offer combined psychoeducational/ neuropsychological and mental health assessments.
*Assessment fees vary depending on the type and complexity of the assessment required. Many insurance providers offer coverage for assessment services provided by a registered psychologist, so we encourage you to check with your provider for further details or contact us for more information.
