Psychoeducational Assessment

A psychoeducational assessment helps uncover how a child/youth learns and processes information. It can identify learning disabilities or other factors, such as ADHD, that may be impacting a child’s academic performance. This type of assessment can also determine if a child qualifies as "gifted" according to their school board's criteria. Updated psychoeducational assessments can be particularly helpful when children are transitioning from elementary school to middle school, or middle school to high school, to monitor development and adjust required supports. Additionally, this type of assessment can help guide vocational and post-secondary planning, and may be required to determine eligibility for certain adult services and supports (e.g., DSO).

Most importantly, a psychoeducational assessment provides valuable insights for parents, teachers, and other professionals, regarding how to best support the child’s unique learning profile and help them reach their full potential across settings.

What Does a Typical Psychoeducational Assessment Involve?

1) A review of relevant background documents, such as report cards and school records.

2) Clinical interviewing with the child/youth, parents, and teachers, to gather key information about cognition and learning.

3) The administration of standardized tests with the child/youth, including behavioral observations during these activities, as well as the completion of questionnaires by the child/youth, parents, and teachers.

4) After the assessment, we provide a detailed verbal explanation of the findings and recommendations in a feedback meeting with the child/youth and/or their parents. A comprehensive written report is also provided, which can be shared with the child’s or youth’s school and other professionals (e.g., family doctor). When requested, we also offer a follow-up meeting with the child’s or youth’s school to discuss the assessment results and educational recommendations.
