Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is designed to support children and youth who have experienced scary or traumatic events, such as accidents, abuse, parental separation, or loss. This approach helps individuals process their trauma in a safe, supportive environment while learning new skills to manage their trauma-related thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

At WellSpirit, we understand that each individual processes trauma differently and every family has their own cultural and/or spiritual practices related to grief, which is why we tailor our approach to meet the individual needs of each and every client. TF-CBT often includes conjoint sessions with parents or caregivers, providing them with the tools to better support their child throughout the healing process.

In TF-CBT sessions, individuals will:

  • Learn how trauma impacts the brain and body, and explore common reactions to traumatic experiences.

  • Recognize negative thoughts and beliefs related to their trauma history and practice reframing them to promote more flexible, balanced thinking.

  • Develop and practice coping strategies to better manage trauma-related emotions and behaviours, helping individuals feel more in control.

  • Safely create a detailed account of their traumatic experience, helping them process and make sense of it in a non-judgmental space.

  • Gradually face trauma-related triggers (e.g., sights, sounds, distressing memories) to reduce their emotional impact and build resilience.

  • Learn new tools and techniques to regain a sense of safety, confidence, and control over their future well-being.

Our approach empowers children and youth to integrate their adverse experiences into their life story in a meaningful way that fosters growth and resilience. With the involvement of parents and caregivers, we aim to create a supportive environment that helps children thrive as they move forward in their healing journey.
