Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps children and youth understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, which may be contributing to challenges in their lives. This evidence-based approach is especially effective for managing mood and anxiety-related issues, such as depression, social anxiety, school avoidance, and OCD. Through CBT, individuals develop healthier coping strategies to better navigate emotions and handle difficult situations.
At WellSpirit, our therapists are highly skilled in adapting CBT to support neurodiverse children and youth, as well as clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, ensuring therapy is both accessible and relevant. Parents and caregivers play an active role in the therapeutic process, helping to reinforce the skills learned in therapy and creating an environment that promotes positive change.
Our team has extensive training in various forms of CBT, including the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children (UP-C) and Adolescents (UP-A), which addresses a wide range of emotional concerns.
In CBT sessions, individuals will:
Gain insight into their emotional and behavioural challenges, along with related diagnoses (e.g., anxiety, depression, OCD).
Develop and practice strategies for recognizing and accepting emotions.
Identify patterns of unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that may be contributing to their distress.
Learn techniques to challenge and replace these thoughts with more flexible, balanced thinking.
Gradually confront fears and triggers they have been avoiding, both internal and external.
Master new skills for managing emotions and coping with difficult situations.
Improve social interactions and adapt to their environments in healthier ways.
Practice step-by-step approaches to solve problems effectively.
Build resilience by recognizing vulnerabilities and planning ahead to maintain mental health and well-being.
Our approach empowers children and youth to take control of their emotional well-being, equipping them with lifelong skills for a healthier future.
